Dark Intent Buffed!

So it seems like Warlock’s buffs are now on a par with the mage!!

A tweet from Matticus (http://www.worldofmatticus.com) alerted me to the fact that Warlocks now have the 10% Stamina buff that was previously from the Imp’s Blood Pact baked in to Dark Intent now. Warlocks of the world rejoice!

I followed this up on MMO-Champ to verify (Not because I doubt Matt’s sources, but for journalistic integrity) and the changes are listed under the latest 5.2 ptr notes. As far as I can see the only other changes for Warlocks in the latest build is a wording change on Fel Armor.

Second Time Lucky?

Image

So after Real Life getting in the way, and a brief foray into the Monk class, (bad idea) and then guild aggro, I’m now hoping to be regularly playing my Warlock, and blogging about it too!

Obviously, much has happened since I last posted. My guild downed Heroic Deathwing the week before Mists hit which was pretty satisfying. Then Mists came out, and I decided to go back to my healing roots, which during 5.0 on a hugely overpowered Panda was great fun. Then 5.1 hit, and it truly felt as though the sky was falling. So, after a brief period of begging our shaman to switch to Resto, I was madly leveling my Warlock once more.

Are Melee Casters Viable?

As long as World of Warcraft has been around, there has been a very obvious divide between the usefulness of ranged DPS against that of Melee. As early as Molten Core, the distinction was obvious. The fact that it was often limited to a single melee group shows that there has never been a time when melee DPS is as favourable as ranged.

Even now, while mostly doable with any composition, there are still times when the melee heavy raid setup that my guild runs with struggles, and Warmaster Blackhorn heroic is close to impossible. (At the time of publishing, Blackhorn had just gone down, but only due to switching to a ranged heavy setup, that was vastly undergeared compared to the Melee mains.)

The only time Melee DPS is preferable is Asira Dawnslayer in the Hour of Twilight. There seems to be a lack of design ideas forthcoming from Blizzard concerning how to incentivise melee DPS, without making ranged completely redundant.

Going Against the Flavour of the Month

I’ve always tended to do things the hard way during my time in the world of Azeroth. Right from when I started, I picked a class that was never going to be capable of holding its own in a competitive situation; the Druid of vanilla was very much along for the buffs, and to spam Healing Touch. God forbid you wanted to be a big furry owl man.

So, at the end of Vanilla, I bowed to pressure, and respecced to Restoration. It wasn’t too bad. With the advent of TBC, Resto Druids became very powerful… almost too much so, so I decided on a change for Wrath. In what was virtually the only FotM change I’ve ever made, I decided to roll a Death Knight. Funnily enough, this change led to the only long term break I’ve taken from WoW, it just never really captured my interest. The problem was, there was a lack of challenge.

Even through Cataclysm, I’ve followed this trend. I played a Resto Druid at release, when they were horribly underperforming. I played a Prot Warrior all throughout Dragon Soul, despite the fact that Prot Paladins and Blood DKs, one of which I already had at maximum level, are arguably the better choices. And most recently, I’ve decided to level up my  poor, long suffering, low level Warlock.
